About Split:
Most of Split’s monuments lie within the area known as Grad (old town), which consists of the Roman-era Diocletian’s Palace, and the adjoining medieval-era section contained within 14th c walls and centering on Narodni trg (People’s Square). Grad has direct access to the south-facing, palm-lined seafront promenade known as the Riva. East of Grad lies the Pazar (open-air market): a 10 min walk east from here brings one to the Maritime Museum, while a 10 min walk southeast to the ferry port and then to Bacvice beach. West of Grad, the pine-scented peninsula of Marjan rises behind Varos, a picturesque labyrinth of traditional Dalmatian stone cottages built into the hillside.
