Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker affectionately known as "La Isla Cariñosa" is one of the hundreds of islands that dot the coastline of Belize.  It is an 8 minute flight from either Belize City or PSW Goldson Int'l Airport on the mainland or San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye.  The Belize Barrier reef a world heritage site is only about a mile east of Caye Caulker and 5 minutes away by boat offering worldclass snorkeling, diving, and fishing and other water sports activities.

On early British maps the island's name is spelled "Cay Corker" Known historically for its plentiful supply of exposed fresh water at La Aguada, one theory holds that this island was a favourite stop for sailors to replenish and cork water bottles. The Spanish name of the island is Cayo Hicaco, which means "the island of the cocoplum." "Caye Caulker" could be an anglicized pronunciation of Cayo Hicaco. Another theory is that boats were caulked in the protected bay, La Ensenada, on the western side of the island leading to the "Caulker" name.

Once a quiet fishing village Caye Caulker has become a mecca for tourist seeking a tranquil place to truly relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Belize.  The island is rapidly becoming a prime tourism destination and catching up with the wave of development being experienced on Ambergris Caye and Placencia as the demand for tourist resorts continue increase.

One of the newest development planned for Caye Caulker is the proposed Pelican Point Marina and Yacht Club by AME Development, a luxury Condominium Resort and Marina designed to blend in and maintain the distinct cultural flavor of Caye Caulker, in a modern setting.
