Langford

History

Langford is located on the southern end of Vancouver Island and is known as one of the Greater Victoria’s Western Communities with a population of approximately 22,500 residents.

Langford traces its history back to 1851 with the European settlement of the area. However, after having succumbed to a barrage of various crimes and mayhem, it experienced a “rebirth” when Langford was incorporated in 1992.  With the incorporation, the city made a concerted effort to revitalize the area, undertaking civic improvements which have attracted new growth and business development.  Among the improvements are the renovation of the business centre, construction of new roads, and creation of a special destination, the Bear Mountain Golf Resort

Langford Real Estate

Langford’s City Council has also set up a programme for creating affordable housing.  Langford real estate has several types of properties available, among which are apartments, multi-family flex-units, as well as single family homes.  It is the city’s goal to provide open spaces and parks within new development areas. In fact, most of the neighborhoods are connected by pedestrian routes and accentuated by parks, schools, and shopping

Climate

The Pacific Ocean, Langford’s topography, and its latitude are profoundly influential on Langford’s climate. The summers are warm and dry, and the winters are mild and wet. The Olympic Mountains provide some protection from large amounts of rainfall, receiving less precipitation per year than Vancouver.  Langford enjoys plenty of sunshine, a high annual average of 2,185 sunshine hours.

Things to Do

The community is growing with “big-box” retail development and shoppers can also enjoy the Westshore Town Centre. The Luxton Fair is held at the local fair grounds in mid-September and is rich with amusement and plenty of food.  For more fun there are go-cart tracks, mini-golfing, and stock-car racing at the Western Speedway

There are also plenty of water activities at the many lakes in the area.  Two premiere developed parks are the Veterans’ Memorial Park and Centennial Park. Kids under 16 years of age can enjoy the Langford Fishing Derby held in July during the Summer Festival.

Education

Langford students attend schools which are part of the School District 62 Sooke. The District has one of Vancouver Island’s largest high schools. In addition to the public schools, the Lighthouse Christian Academy is available for children in Kindergarten through Grade 10.
