Popular & Convenient Clayton Park!

Clayton Park is a well-known, well-established area in Halifax. The original Clayton Park, which was developed in the 1970’s, is located between Dunbrack Street and the Bedford Basin. Clayton Park West, the newer development, was established in the 1990’s. Technically Clayton Park includes the old Clayton Park and the newer Clayton Park West. However, many people lump Wedgewood, Rockingham, Rockingham Ridge, Cresthaven, Sherwood Heights, and Falcon Place into the Clayton Park area.

For many people Clayton Park is a very favorable area in which to live. It is a quick commute to downtown Halifax normally averaging about 15 minutes and 25 minutes during peak times. The metro transit system is extensive in the Clayton Park area allowing for a convenient way to travel to work, school or downtown. Access to the 102 highway (Airport/Truro, Downtown Halifax or South Shore via Hwy 103) is within minutes of the Clayton Park area with on-ramps at Lacewood and Kearney Lake Road.

Homes in the Clayton Park area vary depending on which neighbourhood you are in Clayton Park. You can find homes that are 30+ years old and on large, mature city lots or brand new homes on smaller city lots. Clayton Park is sure to have something to meet all of your needs; it just depends on what you’re looking for. Most of the homes in the original Clayton Park area, Wedgewood and Rockingham offer older more established homes whereas Clayton Park West, Cresthaven and Falcon Place offer newer homes. The area offers single family dwellings (ranging from $160,000 to $700,000), semi-detached homes (averaging $210,000), townhouses (averaging $190,000), condominiums (ranging from $100,000 to $300,000) and rental apartments.

In addition to the variety of homes and the quick commute, homeowners are drawn to this area because of the amenities it has to offer. Clayton Park is only minutes away from Bayers Lake Business Park which has established itself as one of metro’s most popular shopping areas. It offers Old Navy, Home Sense, Future Shop, Winners, Costco, Kent, Home Depot, Chapters and Walmart to name just a few. Halifax Shopping Center, West End Mall and Bayers Road Shopping Center are all within a 10-15 minute drive. There are also numerous mini shopping complexes in each area of Clayton Park.

Entertainment is only minutes away at the Bayers Lake Empire Theater movie complex that hosts 12 movie theaters in addition to an IMAX theater. Or if you prefer golf, there is a Par 3 golf course, driving range and a mini-putt at Fairview Hills Golf Facility.

The Mainland Commons is a facility in Clayton Park West that offers both outdoor and indoor soccer fields. Northcliffe Community Center offers an indoor pool, indoor tennis facility and many community programs. Clayton Park is also home to one of the largest libraries in Nova Scotia.

There are many excellent elementary schools in the Clayton Park area: Grosvenor Wentworth (Primary - 6), Rockingham (Primary - 6), Duc D’Anville (Primary - 6) and Park West (Primary - 9). Students then attend either Clayton Park Junior High (7 - 9), or continue at Park West. All Clayton Park students eventually attend the newly constructed Halifax West High School (10 - 12) located in Clayton Park West.

In my opinion one of the best attributes of Clayton Park is its natural surroundings and the multitude of parks, walking trails and playgrounds that it has to offer. The Mainland North Linear Parkway, also known as the Kearney Lake Trail, runs 4.5 kms through most of Clayton Park. Hemlock Ravine and the trails near Maskawa Aquatic Club offer hiking trails with the HRM.
