Beautiful Hammonds Plains!
Hammonds Plains is Halifax’s version of country living with the added benefit of quick access to the downtown core. Hammonds Plains includes several subdivisions: Kingswood, White Hills, Westwood Hills, Haliburton Hills, Haliburton Heights, Highland Park, Maplewood, Uplands Park, and Glen Arbour.
For many people Hammonds Plains is a very favorable area in which to live. It is normally a 20 - 25 minutes commute to downtown Halifax and averages about 30 – 45 minutes during peak times. Unfortunately the metro transit system has limited service to the Hammonds Plains area. Currently the bus service only extends as far as Kingwood. Access to the 102 highway (Airport/Truro, Downtown Halifax or South Shore via Hwy 103) is about 10-minutes from Hammonds Plains Road. There is a proposal to construct a new a 10-km long, 100-series highway connection (Highway 113) from Highway 103 near the Sheldrake Lake Interchange (Exit 4) to Highway 102 near the Hammonds Plains Road Interchange (Exit 3). This would alleviate the traffic problems on Hammonds Plains road and reduce the distance from Highway 103 to Highway 102 by approximately 13 km.
The style of homes in the Hammonds Plains area varies depending on where you are in Hammonds Plains. Smaller older homes are found in the older neighbourhoods whereas large executive homes are found in some of the newer developments. Generally the lots are larger than average and typically are surrounded by woodland. Most of the homes in the Hammonds Plains area are without municipal sewer and water. A large number of homes in Kingswood subdivision have municipal water.
Hammonds Plains is within 15-20 minutes of Bayers Lake Business Park which has established itself as one of metro’s most popular shopping areas. It offers Old Navy, Home Sense, Future Shop, Winners, Costco, Kent, Home Depot, Chapters and Walmart to name just a few. Bayers Lake Empire Theater movie complex that hosts 12 movie theaters in addition to an IMAX theater is also located in Bayers Lake.
There are two main shopping areas at either end of the Hammonds Plains area. At the entrance of Kingswood there is a small strip mall with a small grocery store, pizza shop and a few other businesses. At the entrance of Westwood Hills across from Haliburton Hills is a larger shopping complex called Hubley Center. This complex has several stores including a Sobeys, McDonalds, Dairy Queen, Piercy’s Building Supplies, Liquor Commission and a public library.
Glen Arbour, which opened in 1999 is one of Halifax’s premium golf courses. This 4 ½ star (Score Magazine) golf course is designed for all levels of play with an 18-hole (par 72) championship course and 9-hole (par3) executive course. Glen Arbour is set amongst three lakes and is known for its breathtaking scenery. Pin Hi par 3 golf course is also located in Hammonds Plains.
Hatfield Farms is located in Hammonds Plains and boasts it is a traditional farm setting where you can experience genuine Maritime cowboy adventures and activities. They offer trail rides, pony rides, riding lessons, wagon and sleigh rides and a petting pen and playgrounds in addition to many cowboy adventures. Fort Clayton, the cowboy camp at Hatfield Farms, can accommodate groups of up to 400 people.
Adjacent to the Hubley Center Shopping Complex is recreational facility that offers an Arena with two ice surfaces, a swimming pool, a gymnasium and a new skateboard park.
There are excellent elementary schools in the Hammonds Plains area: Kingswood Elementary (Primary – 6), which opened in the Fall 2005 and Hammond’s Plains Consolidated (Primary – 5). Students then attend Madelaine Symonds Middle School (Grades 7 – 9) and Charles P. Allen (Grades 10 – 12). Students in the Haliburton Hills and Westwood Hills attend Tantallon Elementary (Primary – 6) and Tantallon Junior High (Grades 7 - 9). A new high school, that is said to be ‘state of the art’, is set to open September 2006, located at the corner of Hwy 103 and Hammonds Plains Road. This school will replace Sir John A. MacDonald high school. There are also two private schools in the Hammonds Plains area.
In my opinion one of the best attributes of Hammonds Plains is the country living aspect close to all of the city’s amenities. The Trans Canada Trail passes through Upper Tantallon and extends along the south shore of Nova Scotia as well as towards Timberlea. The trail is used for walkers, bikers, as well as recreational off road vehicles including ATV’s.
