Windsor has a rich historical heritage and is home to sites such as Fort Edward Blockhouse, a National Historic Site; Shand House and Haliburton House (home of Thomas Chandler Haliburton, father of North American humour), both operated by Nova Scotia Museums; and The Birthplace of Hockey Museum, operated by the Windsor Hockey Heritage Society. The Hants County Exhibition, held annually in Windsor, is the oldest continuous agricultural fair in North America.
Windsor is also home to Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, one of Canada’s most respected theatres for the young. The company’s unique multimedia puppet productions have crossed the continent and traveled abroad. In addition to theatre performances and extensive school tours, Mermaid runs a dynamic youth outreach program and popular puppetry classes.
The Hockey Heritage Society has recently completed a study on the feasibility of developing a large interactive museum in the Town. With the development of a new museum and the potential draw for more tourists, the economic impact of the Hockey Museum on existing businesses in the Town is expected to be greatly enhanced.
Visitors may also visit Long Pond - The Cradle of Hockey, where the students from the King's College School for Boys, today's King's-Edgehill School, played "hurley on ice" as early as 1800.
Many special events take place in Windsor throughout the year, including Sam Slick Days, and Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival activities.
People come from all over the world to view Howard Dill’s "Giant Pumpkins" and to enjoy the annual pumpkin weigh-off. On the same day in October, a popular Wine Fest is held at Ste. Famille Winery in Falmouth, and the Festival of Colours takes place at Ski Martock. Windsor’s growing potential as a tourist destination became even more secure when the Windsor and Hantsport Railway began operating the Evangeline Express. Rail enthusiasts come from far and wide to enjoy the nostalgic trip from Windsor to Wolfville, and to enjoy local hospitality.
