Barrhaven Neighbourhood, Ottawa
Barrhaven is bordered by Fallowfield and the Greenbelt to the north, Prince of Wales (which is Old Provincial Highway 16) and the Rideau River to the east, Cedarview and the new Highway 416 to the west, and Jockvale and the Capital Memorial Gardens to the south.
Barrhaven is a thriving bedroom community, immediately south of the Greenbelt, 20km southwest of downtown Ottawa. With lots of development happening continuously, this community continues to grow! The population of Barrhaven is about 68,000 and is expected to reach a population of 100,000 by 2010.
There are lots of amenities, and community centres including the Walter Baker Sports Centre (which contains a library and other facilities), Southpointe Community Centre, Jockvale Heritage Community Building. The Carleton Lodge long term care home is also in this neighbourhood. The corner of Strandherd Dr. and Greenbank Rd. has become surrounded by a cluster of retail, service, and restaurant facilities.
The National VIA rail system passes through here with a stop at Fallowfield station. Connecting this community to the rest of the country. VIA rail reintroduced passenger rail service here in the fall of 2002. With Highway 416 to the west and the Transitway now extended into Barrhaven, this is an ideal location for someone who does not want to pay downtown city prices, and is concerned about transportation. This community is well connected both into Ottawa and the surrounding communities.
Barrhaven is divided into several areas. Old Barrhaven is the westernmost part of the neighbourhood. The Triangle between Fallowfield Road and the railway tracks. Longfields to the south and Barrhaven on the Green between Jockvale, Greenbank and Strandherd. And Davidson Heights east of Woodroffe. Chapman Mills south of Strandherd and east of Greenbank. And Stonebridge beside the Stonebridge Golf & Country Club.
Development began in the 1960s by Mel Barr, for whom the community is named.
Barrhaven Town Centre complex introduced big box stores to the area.
The area now has it’s own High Schools with the Mother Teresa High School (Catholic) in 1998 and the John McCrae Secondary School (Public) in 1999. Also St. Joseph High School (Catholic) recently was built into the area.
At the end of 2005 a seven-theatre cinema was built. And a power centre on Strandherd Drive featuring Wal-Mart, Staples, Winners, Sport Check and Loblaws.
It takes approximately 30 minutes, on Ottawa’s OC Transpo bus route 95 to get downtown. And there is a convenient park and ride at the Strandherd Transitway Bus Station.
