Tulum is a combination of white sand beaches, archeological zone, and thriving city. You could say that there are three distinct zones making up what people commonly refer to as Tulum.

The municipality broke away from Playa del Carmen in 2008 and now has it's own government. Tulum is the most southern city in the Riviera Maya, before entering the Sian Ka'an Biosphere.

The President of Mexico (Calderon) recently announced, from the majestic back drop of the Tulum Ruins, that there will be a new International Airport in Tulum. It is expected to receive over 3 million passengers in the first year of operations (Cancun sees 28 million).

Scheduled for completion in 2015, the runways are to be long enough for the new Boeing 787's, and Airbus A-380.

Plans for growth in the entire Southern Riviera is massive. The municipality passed a master plan in which each area has been designated restrictions and densities for commercial, residential and tourism. 

Already famous for the stretches of white sand beaches, Tulum will soon be another mega tourist destination.
