Title: Discover the New England Treasure of Candlewood Lake, Connecticut
Candlewood Lake of Western Connecticut is a beautiful man-made lake that covers 5,420 acres and is approximately 85 feet deep at its deepest points. It is the largest lake in Connecticut and offers about 60 miles of shore surrounded by beautiful forest-covered hills as it flows through winding valleys.
Candlewood Lake serves two main purposes. It provides water storage for the Connecticut Light & Power Company via a Main Dam that was built by the company. It is also a private resort and retreat area for many city folks as well as a popular residential area for lake lovers. The cities surrounding the lake include Brookfield, New Fairfield, Danbury, New Milford, and Sherman.
In history, Candlewood Lake was often called by different names, depending on where one lived. "Lake Danbury" almost became the lake's official name. New Milford first called it "Candlewood Lake" because the lake water flowing toward the powerhouse dropped down in a shadow that is cast by Candlewood Mountain. The mountain got its name from early residents who learned to make candles from Indians in the area.
The lake's history dates back to 1917 when a lawyer named J. Henry Roraback bought potential sites for dams along the Connecticut and Housatonic Rivers. Roraback also acquired the Housatonic Power Company, which is now the Connecticut Light and Power Company.
His company completed the construction for the Stevenson Dam by 1919. A pumped water storage reservoir was the next goal; however, the Rocky River basin would have to be flooded along with four existing ponds - Neversink, Barse, Squantz, and Crick. This covered a 5,420-acre tract of land, and many settlers were forced to sell their land and leave the area. By December 1928, the water level had reached 429 feet above sea level. The Rocky River hydroelectric plant was now open for business.
The towns surrounding Candlewood Lake CT are quaint New England towns with lovely homes, neighborhoods, and historic downtown areas. In the Danbury CT area, the lake extends a small portion into the area, giving residents and travelers a refreshing place to rest and enjoy outdoor recreation. Some of the lake activities include boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, cycling, picnicking, and more.
Candlewood Lake real estate is considered prime real estate with the combined benefits of beauty, nature, and water. There are Candlewood Lake homes of permanent residence or summer vacation homes. Rentals and condos are also available along the lake. Contacting a Candlewood Lake real estate agent is a great way to explore what's available.
Those considering a move to Candlewood Lake will find beautiful homes along the lake of all shapes and sizes. The lake is also a center for resorts, recreational facilities, and golf.
