History

American Falls is named after the American Fur Trade Company men who died going over the waterfall back in the early 1800's. In 1925, a huge dam being built above the falls on the Snake River required the entire original town site be relocated above the dam so as to avoid being under the reservoir. When water levels recede in the Fall, you can see remnants of the old town as depicted in these pictures.

As the largest dam along the Snake River, the dam holds a reserve of 1,700,000 acre-feet of water creating a shore line 125 miles long and covering an area of 65,000 acres of land crossing into three counties—Power, Bingham, and Bannock.

Today, people enjoy bird watching, fishing, hunting, and boating on the reservoir and the river below the dam.

Sports & Recreation

Seasonally opened, Willow Bay serves the needs of tourists with a café and store, RV camping with hookups, a dump station, laundry facilities, and propane filling. A docking area for launching into the reservoir allows enjoyment for a host of water recreation opportunities including boating, water sports, and fishing.

The Oregon Trail Sportsman access located on the lower side of the falls provides a fishing and boat launch access available to the public. Otherwise, if preferred, make arrangements for using the private facility through the Seagull Bay Yacht Club.

Of course we always expect the annual rodeo at the Power County Fairgrounds where cowboys and cowgirls from surrounding areas compete.
