Lincoln Square

Lincoln Square Neighborhood - Chicago IL

If you’re looking for an older Chicago neighborhood with real European flair, consider Lincoln Square Homes for Sale.

The Lincoln Square neighborhood is located on the North Side of Chicago, approximately 7 miles northwest of Downtown Chicago and The Loop.  Although it is sometimes known by several smaller communities located within its boundaries – including Ravenswood Manor, Ravenswood Gardens, Bowmanville, and Budlong Woods,  the City of Chicago officially designated this neighborhood as Lincoln Square in 1925.

Historically, Lincoln Square was home to many German families – until about ten years ago, the Davis Theatre, a neighborhood icon, showed German-language films most weekend afternoons.   Now, however, visitors are just as likely to see shops catering to Thai or Middle Eastern cultures.

Still, the neighborhood is home to a number of German businesses, including the Chicago Brauhaus (authentically-attired ethnic bands perform here, without cover charge, several nights a week), Meyer's Delicatessen, Merz Apothecary and Lutz Continental Café.

Lincoln Square is also home of the Chicago branches of DANK (the German-American National Congress) and the Niedersachsen Club. The German-language weekly newspaper Amerika-Woche was founded in the area back in the early 1970’s, although its original headquarters above the Brauhaus is now only a bureau.

Lincoln Square Homes for Sale

About 44,000 people live in the Lincoln Square, in a variety of single and multi-family, brick and frame structures.   Over 1,000 small and medium sized businesses also call the community home.

Downtown commuters use the very convenient Brown Line L, via the Western Avenue and Damen Stations, to begin their roughly 25 minute trip to The Loop.  It is also one of over 20 neighborhoods served by new I-GO Cars.

Lincoln Square is bounded by Peterson Avenue and Bryn Mawr Avenue on the north, Montrose Avenue on the south, Ravenswood Avenue on the east and the Chicago River on the west.   Its close proximity to public transportation, along with its vibrant and recently revitalized main shopping district near Lincoln, Western, and Lawrence Avenues, have made this area trendy, especially among younger families, in recent years.

Locate Lincoln Square on our Chicago Neighborhood Map , identified as neighborhood #4.
