Portage Park

Portage Park, Chicago IL Overview

Located on the northwest side of Chicago, the Portage Park community is about 15 miles northwest of the Chicago  Loop and once populated by Native Americans. A peace treaty, signed in 1816, saw the Indians give up their entitlement to the area and a tavern was ultimately constructed in the area by EB Sutherland. A post office was established in 1845 and in 1889 the township of Portage Park was annexed and became part of Chicago.

The actual Portage Park district was formed in 1912 by a group of neighbors.  Forty acres of land were condemned in order to build a park there. Recreational facilities were slowly added to the park, starting with a lagoon, but additions were made that include tennis courts, baseball fields, a field house, and other recreational facilities.

Portage Park became part of the Chicago Park District in 1934. The beauty of the park attracted developers’ attention and homes started springing up in the Portage Park area. In fact, Portage Park homes for sale increased significantly during the early 1940s and population surged. This continued for decades, but during the ‘90s the population went down again only to rebound in the 2000s.

One notable fact about Portage Park is its shopping. Portage Park has a shopping area called Six Corners that is an outdoor shopping area that is located at the intersections of Irving Park Road, Cicero Avenue, Portage Park, and Milwaukee Avenue.

The name of the community is interesting because it was originally chosen to be West Irving.  Later, residents thought that the area would be better off named after the new Portage Park than anything else - the name stuck and is what the community is known as today. Many families live in Portage Park and it is a great place to look for real estate if you are raising a family in the Chicago area.
