Houlton

The town of Houlton is located on the  terminus of I-95 and is on the U.S. Canadian border. It is a major point of entry and is the gateway to Canada's maritime provinces.

It is the County seat of Aroostook, which is larger than the States of connecticut and Rhode Island combined. Being that it is the county seat it is nicknamed the Shiretown.

It was settled in 1807 by a man named Joseph Houlton.

In the early 1900's Houlton was one of the top 10 richest communities in the U.S. due to forestry and agricultural economic activities. You can see as you pass through the streets of the community the well preserved victorian architecture of the homes and buildings are evidence of prosporous times.

Houlton serves as the center of many year-round recreational activities. Outdoor activities available in the area include boating and canoeing, hiking, mountain climbing, skiing, snowmobiling, photography, hunting and fishing.

Downtown Market Square contains a large collection of Historic buildings and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.
