Webster Groves

Visit WebsterKirkwood.com And Discover Historic
Hometown Living in the Heart of St. Louis

There's a reason that the Webster Groves area is one of the most popular places to live in metro St. Louis.  Imagine a place where neighbors are not just people who live in the house next door but more likely someone you call "friend".   A place where people still walk to the local ice cream parlor or the five and dime and where the train whistle in the distance is a cherished part of every day life.  (View all Webster Listings)

Visitors to Webster Groves are usually impressed by two features above all else: the trees and the homes. Nestled among clusters of elm, oak, and maple trees are gorgeous homes boasting large wrap-around porches, second and third stories, gingerbread trim, and abundant, verdant lawns. Webster has received the "Tree City USA" award for 15 years and is often compared to the historic areas of New England.

Approximately 300 houses are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and more than 100 homes have received the "Century Home" honor awarded by the Webster Groves Historical Society to homes at least 100 years old.

WEBSTER GROVES HISTORY

Downtown WEbsterThe Webster Groves area, comprised of the cities of Webster Groves, Rock Hill, Shrewsbury, and portions of Warson Woods and Glendale, is conveniently located along Interstate 44, with easy access to Interstate 64/Highway 40, the Innerbelt/I70 and Interstate 270. Because the area is a mere 20 minutes from St. Louis, residents take advantage of some of the shortest commutes in St. Louis County.

Though each community is unique, all share a strong sense of community values and have histories dating back to the 1800's. In the late 19th century, overcrowding, congestion, and unhealthy conditions in St. Louis prompted urban residents to leave the city for quieter, safer surroundings. In 1892 the developers of Webster Park, promoted the new community as the "Queen of the Suburbs," offering residents superb housing options in a country-like atmosphere and a close commute to downtown St. Louis jobs. Since then, Webster Groves’ tree-lined streets and abundanceof single-family homes have continued to attract people to the area as a "great place to live, work and play,".

Yet, Webster Groves is not solely the wealthy commuter suburb that early developers planned for. The City of Webster Groves is both geographically and economically diverse which is evident in the variety of its neighborhoods; and in the cooperation and willingness of community members from all walks of life to work together toward common goals.

WEBSTER SHOPPING

A visit to Webster Groves also promises a day of shopping at its best! Nestled amongst Webster Groves' parks, neighborhoods, and churches are many small business districts. Including Old Orchard and the Downtown Webster shopping district.

Here you'll find everything you need including fabulous eateries, banks, barbershops, record stores, and unique specialty shops.  And because Webster has always been a walking community the city streets and businesses were designed to accomodate the daily foot traffic that is so unique in today's busy society.

Special events are planned throughout the year and you can count on tremendous attendance  especially during the cities 4th of July celebration where literally the entire community turns out for the grand parade.  Residents along the route set up catered tents and host parties for friends and family alike.  Later everyone heads out to the Lions carnival and anxiously awaits the evenings fireworks extravaganza!  If you’ve never experienced a true “hometown” atmosphere, then come to Webster the first week in July and learn what community is all about.

WEBSTER SCHOOLS

Webster Groves also is home to the world headquarters of Webster University and the Loretto-Hilton Theatre where productions by the acclaimed Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and the internationally known Opera Theatre of Saint Louis are staged each year.

There are also three private parochial primary schools, a private Catholic high school, the College School of Webster Groves, numerous early childhood educational facilities and of course the Webster Groves School District which is known for it's quality education and strong community support.  (View St Louis Area Schools)
