History: The town of Bedford has a rich history and was established Dec. 23, 1680 having been named purchased by three men from Stamford CT from Chief Katonah. It was the scene of one of the worst battles during the Revolutionary War and had been burnt down by the British in 1779.  Having been devasted, it took many years after the war to recover.  The town symbol is the Bedford  Oak located at Route 22 and Hook Road and its is thought to be about 300 years old. To preserve the landmark, the land where the oak stands was purchased by the town in 1979.
