Pound Ridge

Welcome to Pound Ridge, New York

www.margotfriedlander.net

The Town of Pound Ridge located in north eastern  Westchetser County is about 23.5 square miles in size and as of the 200 census, had a population of 4726. Pound Ridge has managed to keep its rural nature despite pressure for development.

History: Originally home to the Siwanoy and Kitchawong Indians (Mohican tribes, a subgroup of the Algonquians), the town takes its name from a tribal "pound" or enclosure for game that was on one of the area's many "ridges". The Indians led a relatively peaceful life of planting, hunting, and fishing.  Pound Ridge was originally settled in 1640's as part of a tract of land purchased from local Indians by Captain Nathanial Turner, and it was officially incorporated in 1788. For the last 250 years there has been much controversy over the spelling of "Pound Ridge" or "Poundridge", but finally in 1948 the Town of Pound Ridge Board declared the name to be the two-worded version.

Government: The town is governed by a Town Supervisor, elected for a 2 year term,  who is the executive, administrative, and chief fiscal officer of the Town and chairs the Town Board. The Town Board also has 4 Board members elected to 4 year terms and is Pound Ridge's legislative branch, responsible for administering the government, approving the budget and taxes, and appointing members to boards and committees.

Schools: Pound Ridge is part of the Bedford Central School District. There is Pound Ridge Elementary School within the village and Fox Lane Middle School and Fox Lane High School are located on a large campus in Bedford Village which services the entire district.

Business: Pound Ridge has an active Pound Ridge Business Association and is known for its shopping at Scotts Corners. It also has several restaurants and is a mecca for antique lovers with a variety of shops and an annual antique show.
