HEART OF THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS

The high point of your mountain adventure is beautiful Yancey County, established in 1833, in the heart of the Appalachian Highlands.  There are no loftier peaks east of the Rockies than the majestic Black Mountains, capped by the breathtaking panorama from a top Mount Mitchell(state park),elevation 6,684 feet.  The Town of Burnsville, the county seat, is at 2,815 feet (highest average elevation of any county in NC).  The lowest elevation point is at the bottom of the Nolichucky River Gorge at 1,769 feet.  The county boast two native trout streams, the South Toe and Cane Rivers (both famous for trout and game fish).  Total land area is 311 square miles, including 38,200 acres of Forest Lands, 36,500 acres of publicly owned land, and 32,000 acres of farm and pasture land.  Vegetation is lush with nearly every eastern tree species represented, intermingled with profusions of shrubs, small plants and wildflowers.  The average temperature in Janaury is 47 degrees F and in July a cool 82 degrees F.
