The combined population of Spearfish and Black Hills State University (founded in 1883) is approximately 13,500.  Spearfish has a range of cultural attractions usually associated with major metropolitan areas - performing arts, community theater, fine restaurants, varied shopping opportunities, art galleries, museums and many historic haunts.
