South Padre Island Makes Top 10 List in USA Today of Great Places to Get Your Feet Back on the Ground
With vacationers taking trips closer to home, or being smarter about what trips to take, gas prices are playing a major factor. USA Today met with editor-at-large Arabella Bowen of Sherman's Travel Magazine who named South Padre Island in her top 10 list of destinations where it's cool to ditch the car. "With gas prices at or near record levels, it's time to be carefree—and car-free —on vacation this summer," the USA Today June 19 article states.
"South Padre Island is a 34-mile-long, half-mile wide barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico offering wildlife watching, birding, fishing, water sports and even sandcastle-building lessons," Bowen told USA Today. "The Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark is a favorite family attraction."
The article further states that "you're never more than half a mile from the bay or the beach, and there's a free shuttle called The Wave to get you around the island."
